Shade does support the RAW file format for export, however RAW is a moving target. What software and versions did you use to try to open the RAW file? Also, can you send / attach the file to a post to support?

Photoshop - comes out with gibberish
Photoline - won't open
Xara - won't open
Irfanview - decode error (gibberish)

My feeling is that it is an issue with shade having it's own raw format, and maybe it's for a specific piece of software.

I don't think it's worth a support ticket as this isn't something I need (psd works fine), I was merely curious.

Also there are no controls for exporting raw files in shade, so you could use any rendered image to test this feature afaik.
