The modestly mechanized watermill for grinding grains is about as much technology as most halflings want to see on their waterways. Like all traditional halfling architecture, the watermill provides some comfort to visitors, with a fireplace, table and chairs in an upper level, and a lower level grinding area for the work. It even has its own curious mailbox for the daily deliveries of the post and a pleasing entry porch, with beautiful round windows and doors. Along one side of the building is a covered work and storage area, with a weight machine, handy wheelbarrow and sacks of grain.

The town blacksmith has got to be one of the most hardworking people in the village! This two building business has an extension building across the work yard for housing wood and coal fuel, a wheel barrow and a sack or two. The main blacksmith shop shows off all the beauty of halfling architecture, with rounded windows, and curved surfaces. Inside the round door you'll find a variety of tools, the forge and work table. Step outside to the work yard and you'll find the anvil just under cover, various barrels and wheels to repair or make. Everything is lit by lanterns.

The woodcutter leads a somewhat lonely lifestyle, spending much of his time in the forest, splitting logs or building barrels with the help of apprentices. The spiritual life of halflings is a mystery to outsiders. Halfling churches are simple, clean and well maintained buildings with comfortable chairs for listening, singing and thinking. A precariously narrow but sturdy spiral stair leads to the bell tower. Outside find a mailbox and a monument that is easily placed and duplicated.

The guardhouse is the closest thing halflings have to a fortress; those who are assigned to guardhouse duty also pull double duty as firemen and supplemental sheriffs. The halflings have a ballista on order, but it isn't due for a week so they have a collection of logs shaped like a ballista - for practice! A defensive gatehouse and wooden walls protect the building. Inside are several floors, from a deep basement to upper floors with cell-like defensible chambers.
